Orthodox Morning Prayers

Begin the day with the Church.

The Orthodox morning rule is short, ancient, and the same in every parish from Mount Athos to Alaska. It opens with the sign of the Cross, the Trisagion, the Lord's Prayer and the Symbol of Faith, then the prayers of Sts Macarius the Great, Basil, and John Chrysostom.

Order of the Rule

  1. The opening prayers — "In the name of the Father…"
  2. The Trisagion through "Our Father"
  3. The Troparia of the Trinity
  4. Prayer of St Macarius the Great
  5. Prayer of St Basil
  6. Prayer of St John Chrysostom (24 petitions)
  7. The Symbol of Faith
  8. Intercessions for the living and departed

Why morning prayer matters

The Fathers compare the soul without morning prayer to a house with the door left open. "Having risen from sleep, I thank Thee, O Holy Trinity" — before the noise of the day, the Christian remembers Whose he is.

Short on time?

Under your spiritual father's blessing, even three prayers kept faithfully are better than a long rule abandoned. OneTrueFaith carries the full text and a customizable rule so the morning is anchored, no matter what kind of day you're facing.
